Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford began performing in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a few weeks, she realized it was not the right fit for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
